Nia: Move to Heal

Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) is a holistic healing movement practice rooted in ancient body-based traditions like Tai Chi, Yoga, and African Dance. With low-impact barefoot choreography, modifications for every body type, and somatic therapy-inspired mindfulness cues, Nia leaves you feeling grounded and refreshed. As a certified Nia Instructor, I offer private classes and retreats for groups, organizations, and schools. See below for more details.

Bring Nia to Your School!

Dance is cited as improving Social Emotional Learning (SEL) outcomes more effectively than all other art forms and physical activities. This is because of dance’s unique ability to help us express our full range of emotions, while tapping in to our nervous system’s healing processes. Specifically, the dance arts have been used to support special needs students of all ages who struggle with strong emotions, helping them experience a felt sense of both safety and freedom in their own bodies.

As Director of Movement Programs for Bay Area non-profit, Inner City Bliss, I collaborate with local schools to bring this somatic healing movement practice to the underserved populations who need it the most.

Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) takes the natural benefits of dance to an entirely new level with targeted somatic embodiment cues and tools for intrapersonal emotional awareness and self-regulation. For example, students are invited to identify their own nervous system states through breath and heart rate, slowing down, speeding up, or modifying choreography across multiple levels as needed. Students are also offered a chance to sample a wide variety of movement and music styles during any given class, including martial arts, Tai Chi, Jazz, African, and Modern Contemporary Dance. By emphasizing curiosity and free expression within safe boundaries, Nia empowers youth with the skills needed to navigate and process whatever emotions arise in the present moment. The combination of dance and somatic therapy/mindfulness is what makes Nia an incredible resource for any classroom or school program.
